According to the latest data from the NBS, China's copper semis production in August 2024 was 1.9253 million mt, up 1.3% MoM and up 3.2% YoY.

China's copper processing industry continues its regional cluster development. Regionally, in August, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Anhui ranked as the top five provinces in copper semis production, with shares of 24.52%, 15.2%, 13.26%, 11.59%, and 6.32%, respectively, accounting for 70.88% of the total production.

Specifically, China's copper semis production increased by 3.2% MoM, rising from 1.9001 million mt in July to 1.9253 million mt in August. By province, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu produced 472,000 mt, 292,600 mt, and 255,300 mt, respectively. In Jiangxi, due to the impact of the "Fair Competition Ordinance," copper semis production decreased by 6.13% MoM in August. In contrast, Hubei, Tianjin, and Shandong saw significant MoM increases in copper semis production, with Hubei experiencing a substantial rise of 23.18% MoM.

PT Smelting Gresik Returns to Normal Operations Following Short Maintenance Shutdown
According to SMM market research, the PT Smelting copper smelter in Gresik, Indonesia, temporarily suspended production following an equipment issue in August. The repair work took around two weeks, and the smelter has now returned to normal operating levels. Public disclosures showed that PT Smelting halted operations from August 8 for furnace repairs. The facility, 66%-owned by PT Freeport Indonesia and 34%-owned by Mitsubishi Materials, has expanded copper cathode capacity of approximately 342,000 t/y and concentrate processing capacity of around 1.3 Mt/y. During the temporary shutdown, Freeport adjusted its shipment schedule and accelerated the restart of its new Manyar smelter. With PT Smelting now back at normal operating levels and Manyar resuming concentrate feeding in August and cathode production in September, both of Freeport's copper smelting facilities in Gresik have returned to production. However, Manyar remains in a ramp-up phase, with its operating rate largely dependent on the recovery of concentrate supply from the Grasberg Block Cave mine.
